birth mother  You are Not Alone!

The most important thing for an expectant mother to know when you are thinking about making an adoption plan is to know that you are not alone.  Deciding to find a family to parent your child is one of the most difficult decisions you will ever have to make both for you and your baby.  If you work with an adoption agency (such as Family Connections, Inc) you will receive support and guidance to help you decide if you want to place your child in an adoptive home or parent your child.

If you are considering adoption please know that it is a process with many steps that can be both sad and joyous at the same time.  It is always difficult to make any life changing decisions but when emotions combine with hormones it can make it even more difficult.

Calling an adoption agency and exploring options and learning about the adoption process does not commit you to an adoption.  At Family Connections we will explore all your options.  The adoption staff wants you to be educated and comfortable about your decision to choose another family to parent your child.  Discussions are not judgmental and the staff will never tell you what to do.  At Family Connections our core belief is in your right to self determine.  All our services are free to you.  If you decide to parent your child there will be no charge for any services you receive.  This is New York State law.

New York State law allows agencies to help you financially with pregnancy related expenses.  An agency can also connect you to other state services that can help with your expenses.  In New York State  we can always find you medical insurance if you are pregnant.  Our goal as an agency is to help you get through your pregnancy and receive the care you need.  We can help you get medical care, counseling and legal advice.

An adoption is a legal process.  Agencies have an attorney and adoptive parents have an attorney and Family Connections feels that you should have an attorney too.  This attorney will only represent you.  The attorney’s job is to make sure that your rights are protected and that you understand all the legal process and legal options in an adoption.  Your attorney will work for you.

When you choose to give your parental rights to another family, you are in charge of the adoption plan.  You will have the advice of an attorney, counseling, education and support from the social workers of the agency.  All of the choices are yours.  You can choose to have an open adoption.  This adoption process involves looking at prospective adoptive parent profiles, meeting with these families with the agency social worker at your side, and choosing the family you fall in love with.  At Family Connections we believe you are the best person to choose a family for your child.  In an open adoption you can also choose to have the adoptive parents send you pictures and letters after the adoption.  You can also choose to have visits with your child.  Many adoptive families hope that you will choose some openness in your adoption plan but they will respect your choices.

If you choose adoption for your baby you will have lots of support and expert guidance to educate you so that you can make a good choice for you and for your baby.  Family Connections provides adoption serves to birth mothers all over New York State.  We are located close to Syracuse, Binghamton, Ithaca, Rochester, Elmira and Buffalo.  We also have a social worker in the New York City area.  We would be honored to support your plans.

Please contact Dan or Angela at 1-607-756-6574 or info@adoptfamilyconnections.org for a free and confidential meeting about your options.
