People not familiar with adoption have lots of ideas about the kind of women birth mothers are.  Some people think they might be selfish, inhuman, unloving and cold.  Those people are flat-out wrong.  Here are 5 things that birth mothers REALLY are. 5 Reasons Why Birth Mothers are Amazing Women

  1. They are selfless. Their pregnancy creates a crisis in their life.  They make the incredibly selfless choice to carry their baby to term and place him or her in the best home they can find with the hope that their baby will have everything they need in life and more.

  1. They are strong. During a time in their life when they might feel the most alone, they don’t listen to people in their lives and a society that tells them they are wrong for not parenting their baby or making a mistake by carrying the baby to term.  Instead, they choose to give two amazing gifts.  They give their baby the gift of life, and they give parents desperately hoping for a child the gift of family.  They go through nine months of pregnancy and delivery, then place that baby in the loving arms of another family.  That is strength.

  1. They are loving. They love their unborn baby so much that they decide to give that baby the best life possible.  They make a plan, and stick to it.  Even though they may feel like they cannot give their baby the life they deserve, they find a family that will give that child everything they need and more.

  1. They are bold. They risk shame, misunderstanding, judgment, pain, grief, and loss to provide another family with something they have always wanted- a baby. In the face of all of those risks, they carry their baby and deliver it into the arms of strangers- strangers whom they have chosen to receive the joy of that child.

  1. They are warriors. In today’s world, women have many options when faced with an unplanned pregnancy.  Birth mothers choose life- life for the baby and life for the family the baby becomes a part of.  They boldly face their pregnancy knowing what grief, pain and loss lies ahead.  They forge ahead though obstacles like societal pressure, the physical demands of pregnancy and misunderstanding from friends and family.  They choose to take their pain and crisis and turn it into joy for others.

Birth mothers are so much more.  They are amazing, beautiful, strong, giving and kind.  They give the greatest gift of all.  When faced with a crisis, they choose to take the road less traveled.  Though that road can be long, lonely and painful, these women take it knowing what joy they carry.  Joy not necessarily for themselves, but for a family which was missing a piece until they placed that beautiful, miraculous baby in the arms of joyful adoptive parents who don't know how to thank them.  All birth mothers deserve unending respect for choosing life for their child when it is clearly not the easiest option.  They are amazing women.
