Congratulations on deciding to build your family through adoption. You are embarking on a wonderful journey that will begin with a home study investigation and end with the joy of a child. To be eligible to adopt a child domestically or internationally, you must successfully complete a home study investigation.
If you are choosing to adopt from the United States (domestic adoption) your home study must be conducted by an authorized/licensed adoption agency in your state of residence. Family Connections, Inc. is an authorized adoption agency that provides home study services for families throughout New York State- Cortland, Syracuse, Binghamton, Rochester, Albany, Watertown, Ithaca, Elmira, New York City, Long Island and all towns in between.
If you are choosing to adopt a child from a foreign country (international or inter-country adoption) your home study must be conducted by an adoption agency that is authorized/licensed in your state of residence and that has achieved Hague Accreditation. Family Connections, Inc. is an authorized adoption agency that is Hague Accredited. The agency provides Primary Provider Services for families adopting from Belize, Bulgaria, Honduras, Hungary, Jamaica and Pakistan. We also provide home study and post-adoption supervision services for families adopting from any foreign country.
The Purpose of the Home Study Investigation Is:
- To ensure that an adopted child would be safe and nurtured in your home.
- To prepare you for the addition of a child to your family through adoption.
Your social worker will discuss with you such things as: child development; post-institutional affect; developmental delays and available services; attachment; trans-racial/trans-cultural adoption issues; separation and loss; life-long family and child adoption development; the importance of honoring your child's birth parents; how to nurture an open adoption relationship; etc. In addition, your social worker will refer you to adoption training opportunities, adoption literature, adoption support groups, and other on-line resources for adoptive parents. The better informed and prepared you are to become adoptive parents the greater success the child and you with experience.
- To understand your adoption plan and the essence of who you and your family are so that your adoption results in a "good fit" for the child.
