Families wanting to adopt a child internationally are looking to Russia. Right now in Russia there are children waiting in orphanges for their forever family.

The first step in adopting from Russia is securing home study sevices and selecting a international adoption placement  agency that is accrediated by the Russian Ministry of Education.  Family Connections, Inc., is an authorized New York State adoption agency that provides home study services to families wishing to adopt internationally (including Russia). When considering placement agencies, typically an agency that works within many regions in Russia will be able to refer a child without a long wait.  Frank Adoption Center is one international adoption agency that is accrediated by the Ministry of Education to work in many Russian regions.

Children waiting for a forever family:

  • Are typically between the ages of nine and thirty-six months.
  • Are usually of Caucasian, Gypsy or Euro-Asian heritage
  • Most often are healthy children with the potential for normal growth and development.
  • Typically the wait for an infant girl can be longer than for an infant boy, as many requests are made for little girls.

What is the process to adopt from Russia?

Steps To Complete Before You Are Able to Consider a Child:

  • Research and locate a home study agency and placement agency
  • Complete the home study process with your home study agency
  • Complete all necessary paperwork and your dossier documents for your placement agency
  • Obtain Citizenship and Immigration Services approval to adopt from Russia

Steps To Complete To Consider A Child:

  • Recieve a referral of a child for your consideration from your placement agency.  You may receive a picture of the child and a medical and social history on the child.
  • You will then decide if the referred child is the right fit for your family.
  • If you feel good about the referred child, you will travel to Russia to meet the child.  You will spend time with the child in the orphanage.  At this time you can also bring a Russian doctor to the orphanage to evaluate the child.
  • Only after you have met the child and spent time with him/her are you asked to commit to the adoption of the child.  After meeting the child and having a doctor assess the child, if you feel this is not the right child for your family, the Russian officials will work with you to consider another child.  The Russian officials will not make you feel badly for declining a child.
Steps to Complete to Adopt A Child:
  • After committing to the child you will then begin the formal adoption process.  You will return home (without the child) to complete documents needed for the Russian court.
  • Once the Russian court receives and reviews the needed documentation regarding the child and your family, you will be given a court date.  You will return to Russia to appear in court and finalize the adoption of the child.  During this second trip, you will be able to spend time with your child.
  • The Russian court will require you to wait 30 days before you can bring your child home.  Thus you will return home (without the child) to complete the mandatory 30 day "waiting period" for the Russian courts.
  • Soon after the 30 day waiting period, you will return to Russia to pick up your child and immigrate your new child through the U.S. Embassy in Moscow.  You will return home with your new child!
