Adoption Options

If after speaking with us you decide to pursue adoption, please know that you will be able to choose the adoptive family and the kind of adoption you want for your child and for yourself. Family Connections has a number of legally qualified adoptive parents who each possess a great deal of love and support necessary to nurture and guide a child. Most of these adoptive families are unable to give birth to a biological child and are looking forward to parenting a child through adoption.

Family Connections is a community-focused organization and is proud to serve all of New York State with specialized support and additional resources for expectant mothers in adoption Syracuse, adoption Rochester, adoption Ithaca, and adoption Long Island - we have additional resources for expectant mothers in these areas.

There is an array of adoption options to consider. Every adoption plan is individualized and will be specific to your wishes. You will be in the driver’s seat and will make a plan that is right for you and your child. Most adoption plans are categorized as confidential (commonly referred to as closed) or open adoptions.

Open Adoption

In an open adoption, you will develop a relationship with the adoptive family.  Each open adoption is unique and reflects your personal wishes. The degree of openness with the adoptive family will depend upon your choices. Options can include:

  • Meeting 2-3 families before choosing a family
  • Whether or not to have contact with the family prior to your child’s birth
  • Receiving photos and letters from your child’s adoptive parents as he/she grows
  • Ongoing visitation with the adoptive family

The choices are yours and all agreements made between you and the adoptive parents are woven into the legal process and can be enforced by the courts. The possibilities are many and the choices are entirely yours.

Confidential Adoption

In a confidential adoption, your identity and that of the adoptive parents are held in the strictest of confidence. Neither you nor the adoptive parents will share identifying information. However, you may still may choose the adoptive parents and meet the adoptive parents if you wish.
