birth mother  When making an adoption plan for your unborn child, you, the birth parent, choose the adoptive family for your child.  You make the choice.  You know what family would be best for your child.

Family Connections, Inc. (an adoption agency) has many qualified adoptive families waiting and wanting to adopt.  To learn about these families click here.

In New York State, all adoptive families must be investigated (known as a home study) and approved as adoptive parents.  Family Connections conducts extensive studies of each of its adoptive families.  To qualify as an adoptive family, a family must successfully complete a home study investigation that includes the following:

  • Interviews with a qualified social worker face-to-face.
  • A home inspection to ensure the safety of the home for a child.
  • Child abuse and neglect history reviews from any state and country in which the prospective adoptive parents and any adult household members have lived as an adult.  NO person with a history of child abuse, neglect or maltreatment will be approved as an adoptive parent.
  • Screening through the Vulnerable Person's Central Registry regarding abuse and neglect of persons with special needs.  All approved adoptive parents have NO history of abuse, neglect or maltreatment of a person with special needs.
  • State and federal criminal history reviews conducted by the New York State Department of Justice Services and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).  NO person with a criminal history of violence or endangering the welfare of a child will be approved as an adoptive parent.
  • Medical examinations for the prospective adoptive parents, minor children, and any adult household members.
  • Autobiographies of the prospective adoptive parents.
  • Verification of income, assets and liabilities.
  • References from friends, clergy, co-workers, childcare providers, etc.
  • Proof of birth and marriage.
  • Adoptive parent questionnaires and surveys.
  • Adoption preparatory training.

All prospective adoptive parents who are considered by a birth parent must be approved as adoptive parents at the conclusion of their home study investigation.  A birth parent can be assured that any prospective adoptive family they wish to consider for their child is fully investigated and well prepared to parent a child in a loving and safe home.

As the birth mother you can specify the family characteristics that are important to you in an adoptive family, for example:
  • The religion of the adoptive parents
  • Type of family (two-parent family, traditional stay-at-home mom, two career couple, same sex couple, single parent)
  • Childless couple or children in the family)
  • Racial composition of the family
  • Education level of adoptive parents
  • Age of adoptive parents
  • Financial status of family
  • Place of residence (city, suburban, rural)
  • Pets or no pets
  • Any other characteristic important to the birth parent

Once the adoption agency (Family Connections) understands your preferences for adoptive families, the agency will provide you with profiles (books and videos) of adoptive families for your review.  You may receive as few as four or as many as ten families to choose from (please know you can always request more families to consider).  From these profiles, you may choose a family or you may request to meet two or three of the families before making your decision.  If you decide to meet families, our Agency takes you and the adoptive family out for lunch or dinner so you can get to know each other in a relaxed setting.  After reviewing the family profiles and/or meeting with prospective adoptive families, you will make your choice of family.  Like all other aspects of adoption, your choice of a family will not be influenced by the adoption agency, counselor, lawyer, judge, doctor, etc.  The decision belongs to you!

Family Connections, Inc. is a New York State adoption agency who has been supporting birth parents for twenty years.  We help birth mothers residing anywhere in New York - Syracuse, Binghamton, Rochester, Albany, Buffalo, Watertown, New York City, Long Island, and all towns in between.  We have many adoptive parents who are waiting and wanting to adopt and would be honored to be considered as parents for your birth child.
